Lexus IS 250 C

Lexus IS 250 C – First Reactions

The launch of the IS 250C at the 2008 Paris Motor Show grabbed the attention of the world’s motoring press.

Here’s what some of the motoring magazines and motoring websites had to say…

“BMW, Mercedes and Audi will also be keeping a close eye on the new Lexus cabrio, gunning as it does at cars like the 3 Series, CLK and forthcoming A5 cabrio. It’s a big step up from the rather blobby old SC too, and further adds to the IS line up after the arrival of the IS-F performance version.”

“The new drop-top IS looks good, though the stacked roof does add a lot of visual bulk to the rear of car…”

“Where most folding roofs compromise space in the back, Lexus has got round this by adding 50mm onto the rear overhang compared to its saloon sister.

This, combined with an 'ultra-compact' roof design, gives a large boot space, while 300mm more door length and sliding front seats gives easy access and generous accommodation for rear passengers.

The IS 250C has been styled to offer minimal wind turbulence with the top down, and, with extensive revisions to the body structure and suspension providing enhanced torsional stiffness, the car's low NVH performance is on a par with the saloon.

A number of technical revisions ensure the 250C's on-board comfort and entertainment systems operate effectively when the roof is down.”

“The IS 250C displays Lexus quality and attention to detail in every aspect of its construction and is designed to exceed customer expectations with its fusion of top-down driving pleasure and uncompromised dynamic performance.”

“Lexus has added a drop-top IS to its model line-up, the open IS offering the best of both worlds with a lightweight folding aluminium hardtop.

What's all the fuss about?

The IS 250C is one of the few surprises at the Paris show, Lexus managing to keep images of the drop-top version of its IS model to itself until the official unveiling. It's set to compete against cars like BMW's 3 Series Convertible, the Saab 9-3 Cabriolet and Audi's A4 Cabriolet. A busy market then, which Lexus hopes to make a big impact in with its new IS 250C.”

“The new Lexus IS 250C combines the award-winning design of the IS sports saloon with outstanding open-top engineering ingenuity.

Prices should be around £30,000 when the IS goes on sale, which should be in time for next summer - when the UK weather will probably make you thankful for that metal roof.”

“The Lexus IS250C can lose its top in just 20 seconds! It might not be the fastest car in a straight line, and certainly won't be the best to drive, but at least it manages to look good whether the top's up or down.”
